Fine Art Landscape with the GFX

Scotland is majestic, brooding, powerful and a photographers playground. From the coasts to the mountain tops there is inspiration for us all. This workshop will be based in the heart of Scotland at Glen Coe and will introduce you to the getting the very best out of the landscape, yourself and your equipment.

Glen Coe is one of the most visited places for photographer because it has easy access to some truly spectacular landscape.

It is without doubt my favourite place to watch the weather as I compose images, inspired by the mountains towering over the lochs and landscape, making me feel tiny and sometimes a bit lost among the majesty of the glen.

ITINERARY

The day will be structured in the following way (we recommend due to the early start you travel the day before and find accommodation)

0700 arrive for Dawn shoot

0750 dawn shoot - light, composition, use of filters lens choice and viewpoint

0930 Break for Breakfast

1030 review of dawn shoot and thoughts on composition, and technique

1130 late morning shoot

1500 Break for late lunch

1630 Arrive for evening/later afternoon shoot - pulling it all together for the final event of the day

1815 Sunset Shoot followed by questions and review

Locations dependent on weather; Loch Achtriochtan, Clachaig Falls, Loch Leven, Glencoe Lochan, The Study, Black Rock Cottage and Buachaille Etive More.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • How to previsualise and “see” images, distilling the essence of the place into your compositions.
  • Lens choice and viewpoint, both integral to creating the image you have conceived.
  • Use of graduated filters to control the contrast between, land, sea and sky.
  • Long exposure techniques using neutral density filters to soften seas and give movement to skies.
  • Creating panorama images to allow you to truly reflect scale

YOUR COURSE LEADER: PAUL SANDERS

Paul Sanders started his career as a news photographer working for regional and national newspapers and agencies before being appointed Picture Editor of The Times in 2004.

After 20 years in the deadline driven world of news Paul stepped back from the frontline and started shooting landscapes.

His images of the coast are described as calming and meditative. He works in a mindful way, allowing time to “connect” with the landscape, letting the picture come to him rather than forcing the creative process.

Paul is a Fujifilm X-Photographer,  Lee Filters and Fotospeed ambassador, he is widely published in the UK photographic media and has exhibited his work around the UK and Europe.

WHAT KIT DO YOU NEED?

Paul shoots with a GFX50S and because of this you will have the chance to try the GFX50S and some lenses on the day. You will have an 16GB SD card to take home with you. Please bring your own cards too as GFX files are very large and you will need space!

Prepare for all weather conditions so you should wear layers, have waterproofs and walking boots / shoes. Please also bring your own food and snacks and water to keep yourself topped up throughout the day.
